DAY 2 > PHNOM PENH
With Ochre colored colonial buildings, bustling squares, trendy cafés and frangipani-lined boulevards, Phnom Penh has the atmosphere of a provincial French town. We take a city tour to visit the National Museum which houses Khmer art and sculptures from various periods of Cambodian history. Visit the Royal Palace, built in 1866 by King Norodom; it is home to the Silver Pagoda, so-named because its floor is made up of 5,000 silver tiles. In 1975 the radical Khmer Rouge party, under its leader Pol Pot, seized power and declared ‘year zero’. During the next three years, an estimated two million Cambodians died, many from starvation and exhaustion while others were tortured and executed for being ‘enemies of the state’. Learn more about these terrible years through a visit to the infamous Tuol Sleng Museum. (Optional. Warning: Exhibits are graphic, and may cause distress.) Overnight in Phnom Penh.

DAY 3 > PHNOM PENH – SIEM REAP – ANGKOR COMPLEX
After an early breakfast, transfer to airport for flight to Siem Reap. On arrival, transfer to hotel for check-in. Begin your exploration of the ancient city of Angkor this afternoon by travelling by tuk tuk to the intricately carved Khmer ruins at Angkor Wat, one of the world’s most impressive temple ruins. Constructed between 9th and 13th centuries, the temple still houses hundreds of fine carvings of Apsara and Hindu mythology. Stroll around the massive hallways and discover small shrines still in use today by the local people. In the afternoon, visit the royal city of Angkor Thom. At first glance, it seems just a shapeless mass of stone, but further scrutiny reveals enigmatic faces looking at every direction with half-closed eyes. Continue to Elephant Terrace which once served as a platform from which to view victorious armies and the Leper King Terrace with perfect carvings winding along a narrow passage way. Tonight enjoy dinner with Cambodia Traditional performance at local restaurant. Overnight Siem Reap.

The magnificent roots of the trees push themselves between the temple’s huge stone blocks in an embrace, emphasizing the ‘lost city’ feel. In the afternoon, drive 35 km to the rural outskirts and visit the jewel of Khmer art, Banteay Srei temple. Its red sandstone walls are decorated with elaborate carvings and in an amazing state of preservation. Return to Siem Reap overnight.
