Day 2: Angkor Wat and Ta Phrom Temples
After breakfast, start exploring the stunning temples by taking a tuk-tuk ride to the royal city of Angkor Thom. At first glance, it seems a shapeless mass of stone, but further scrutiny reveals enigmatic faces looking in every direction, with half-closed eyes, all looking content and serene. Continue your exploration by visiting Elephant Terrace served as a platform from which to view returning armies and the Leper King Terrace with perfect carvings winding along a narrow passage way. In the afternoon, visit the intricately carved Khmer ruins at Angkor Wat, one of the world’s most impressive temple ruins constructed between the 9th and 13th centuries. The temple still has intact hundreds of fine carvings of Apsara and Hindu mythology. Stroll around the massive hallways to discover small shrines still in use today by the local people.
Then move onto the temple of Ta Phrom, jungle covered and pretty much left as originally found by European explorers to create a mystical atmosphere.
Back to Siem Reap (15 minutes away) for lunch and a rest in the hot midday. This afternoon return to explore Angkor Wat – the most famous and best preserved of all the Angkor temples. You’ll have time for a thorough exploration with your guide before watching the sun set over the park from Pre Rup Temple.

After lunch visit Phnom Banan, an 11th century hill top temple with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Phnom Sampeou Mountain is the next destination, again boasting fantastic views and home to the “Killing Caves”, a cavern in which a golden reclining Buddha lies peacefully next to glass fronted memorial filled with the bones and skulls of victims of the Khmer Rouge who were beaten to death and thrown through the overhead skylight. An ingenious way of making use of the single track, you’ll be transported on a track that winds through beautiful countryside, twisting and dropping in every direction. If you meet someone coming the other way, the lightest has to be lifted off the track to allow the other through. A unique and memorable experience, although not a cultural high, it may still be one of your favourite holiday experiences.

The floor consists of 5,329 solid silver tiles to which the building owes its name. Later, opt to take a journey through Cambodia’s more turbulent past. Situated 17km from Phnom Penh town, Cheung Ek was made famous by the movie “The Killing Fields”. Nowadays, a large memorial has been built to commemorate the 17,000 victims who died here under the reign of Khmer Rouge leader, Pol Pot. The remnants inside the memorial and the mass graves that dot the area remind you of the suffering of the victims. Besides the tragic past, you will also start to appreciate the tremendous courage of the Cambodian people to move on and rebuild their nation.
